Instagram marketing tips and tools to get more followers and more engagement

With 30% of the world’s global population now on Instagram, and with 1 billion active monthly users, there is no denying that the platform is a powerful marketing tool.   User engagement on the platform is 10 times higher than Facebook, 54 times higher than Twitter and 84 times higher than Pinterest. The beauty industry is visual, so Instagram is the perfect place for you to market your salon.  

However, recent algorithmic updates have limited reach on the platform, making it harder for brands to engage with consumers, having a huge impact upon organic marketing campaigns.  With this in mind, we’ve put together tips and tools to increase engagement and reach on the platform.

1. Be aware of how often to post

Research shows that you should post one or twice per day from your Instagram profile in order to maximise engagement.  Knowing what time to post is also crucial. Use the insights tool on your Instagram business profile to see when your followers are most active and plan your content posting schedule around that.

The content that you share on Instagram needs to be engaging.  Be a storyteller. Use images, videos and Instagram stories to sell your salon and services.  Showcase your work but don’t just bombard your followers with advertising focused messages.

3. Branding is key

Be clear, be creative and be consistent when it comes to the content that you post.  Make sure that you interact with your followers regularly, answer questions and use the comments section under your posts to engage with them.  Encourage them too to share their own photos – ask clients to take a selfie in your salon and tag you in it.

4. Use the full range of facilities that the platform offers

Use videos, subtitles and closed captions.  Facebook research shows that captioning videos increases average video view times by 12%.

5. Know your hashtags

Choosing the right hashtags to accompany your posts can be the difference between your audience seeing them or not.  Use a mix of trending and product-specific hashtags to connect with your target audience. Also, the number of hashtags you use is key, with 91% of posts by the biggest beauty focused brands using seven or less to boost likes.

6. Create an SEO strategy for your Instagram profile

Both your account handle and account name affect your profiles SEO. The name that you register with which should reflect the industry in which your business operates in, so, for salon owners like yourself, this needs to be beauty.  Instagram can identify the content of your posts, so it needs to fit with your handle.
Your account name should reflect your account handle and industry. When users search Instagram it’s your account name that the platform will cross references the searches against.

7. Understand filters

Research shows that using the same filter on each post can help to boost your Instagram profiles engagement.

8. Influencer Outreach

9. Encourage your team to share their work

Encourage your employees to share work their proud of on their own feeds and tag you in it.  Not only will it motivate them, it’s also a great way of spreading your brand message.
