The ultimate guide to eyelash extensions and that easy glam look

If you’re an eyelash extension virgin, and you’ve never tried eyelash extensions before, get ready to fall head over heels in love.

Even if you know you want a simple, subtle look, there are tonnes of options for you. Yet on the other hand, if you’re looking for something a bit more wow and glamourous, there’s a style just for you.

Lashes  can make the biggest difference to your face in an instant. You never really know until you’ve tried them, but the sudden enhancement that lash extensions can give you is really quite genius.

We like to say that lash extensions give an ‘easy glam’ update to your look. These days, you can pick exactly the look and feel you want and they’ll transform your face in a matter of hours.

With this in mind, we’ve put together a guide outlining the different types of lash extensions available to help you choose the best look for you.

Individual / Classic Semi-Permanent Lashes:

These are the most common type of lash extension and is a standard eyelash extension offering across most salons. This is because they give your lashes a boost, and can look subtle or dramatic, depending on the length you choose.

The lashes are applied as individuals and blended into your natural lashes, to give a fuller, longer look. When this 1-layer look is applied, it can be quite subtle and natural looking, yet eye-opening at the same time. They are expected to last around 3-4 weeks if you look after them properly. As your natural lash grows out, the false lash will grow with it, and therefore not get tangled or damage your natural lashes. This also means that they can be infilled after the false lash falls off without building lashes up on top of each other.

As this type of lash is applied one lash on top of each of your own lashes, it can take 1-2 hours to apply.

Cluster lashes / Party lashes:

Cluster lashes – also known as party lashes – can also be applied in a salon for a neater, more professional finish. There are usually preferred for those who have an occasion in which they require a full-on lash look, but only for a short period of time. Instead of being on one long strip, with these you use tweezers to drop each cluster on top of your lashes, spreading them evenly along your lash line.

These are slightly quicker to apply than the classic semi-permanent lashes and other styles mentioned below, as the clusters sit on several of your lashes instead of one.

Russian Volume Lashes

Russian volume lashes are fast becoming one of the most popular choices. They involve a technique that can allow anything from 2-6 lashes to be applied on just one of your own, also known as 2-6d. Because you can go as ‘full’ as you like, this trend is growing hugely in popularity.

If it is an instant, ‘wow factor’ volume look you want, then this is possibly the lash extensions you’ll want to go for. The result is a fluttery, three-dimensional effect, not a flat look, and it also lasts the longest of the lash options at around 6 weeks if you look after them well. However, it is usually the most expensive and can sometimes take around 2.5-3 hours to apply depending on whether you go for 2D, 3D, 4D, 5D or 6D.

Mink Lashes

When you book in for Russian Volume, some salons will give you the choice of Mink or Silk. If you want a more natural look, then mink is for you. Mink lashes are great for giving a really fluttery and fluffy feel, a real eye-opening effect. The fluffy lash blends well with your natural lashes, giving a more natural finish. Mink is also the most lightweight and realistic.

However, mink extensions can be the pricier lashes, and although they are cruelty free, some people don’t like the idea of fur.

Silk Lashes

Silk lashes are thicker than mink, so these are great if it’s a more glamorous look you’re after. Silk lashes are much denser than mink, so they work for those that want a noticeable, thicker lash look.  They also hold the curl well and stay put, so that an easy glam look is achieved at a good price.

The downside to silk lashes is that they do usually look false – it’s hard to pass off that you have these striking, thick lashes naturally!

Whichever route you wish to go down, eyelash extensions are a popular, instant way to add easy glamour to your look, and are brilliant for the party season especially. Just make sure you research the salon chosen, and that a fully trained professional is carrying out the treatment
